Allison Who?

27.

Once upon a time I lived in Clarion. Then I moved to Pittsburgh. Now I live in La Jolla

Health-specific public relations by day. Volunteering, fun things, friends, and having an amazing life by night.

Two dogs: Dori and Evgenilamalu (Evi). Evi lives in PA for now… I miss him. Luckily he writes a blog.

I Google everything.

Likes: green grapes, granola bars, family, friends, tomato soup (or anything tomato-based, actually), dogs, apples, sunshine, smiling, being happy. Recently added to my list of likes: being able to walk to the ocean.

Dislikes: Squirrels, mean people, winter weather, but mostly just squirrels.

The events in my life are comical.

I occasionally (frequently) laugh at myself.

If I ever move back to the east coast, I’m selling EVERYTHING and simply buying a one-way ticket. The end.

I REALLY really REALLLYYYY love my life.

Your main photo is sassy but missing a nose. I thought we had this conversation… your nose is cute! (Unlike “bump… no bump…”)

I really, really like this layout. And your writing. And you!

Love you, lady! xoxox

Hi Allison :)
I stumbled upon your blog when searching for info on moving across the US. In your Allison Who? post I see you write that you would sell everything if ever you moved back to the east coast. :) I’m planning a move from Michigan to Cali in May and so I am curious about that statement! I have a furnished one-bedroom apartment. I’ve been thinking I may rent a trailer and hook it up to my Jeep to bring my things along with me… But my Jeep is old and I’m planning to get rid of it once I get to Cali and buy something else (or perhaps I’ll buy something here in MI before I leave…). Also, I have no idea where I’m going to be living! I’ll be in Sacramento, but as for the exact apartment, that will be unknown until after I get there and scope out the area a bit. So my things may sit in storage for a bit after I arrive in Sac.
Do you have a post here on your blog where you talk about your move? Or would you be so kind as to share your thoughts on my situation? :) Jen

Hi, Jen– thanks for writing! In hindsight, moving was TOUGH, and expensive… but I likely made it more difficult on myself (I moved in six weeks time, with a vacation and two work trips in between) and more expensive than necessary. I’m happy to share my tips/ suggestions. I think I was slacking on the posts on my move, but maybe I need to write one. Anything specific you have questions on?

Hi again! You were so quick to respond to me; I’m sorry for the delay in my response! :)

The main thing I wonder about is how you decided to bring your things with you. How you would make the decisions about what to bring with you and what to leave behind if ever you made such a long-distance move like that again?

Jen– it all boiled down to me actually being quite lucky to have the option. I wasn’t planning on bringing everything, but once I did decide to hire movers, almost all of my stuff was under the minimum weight anyways, so it worked out for me. Initially, I was planning to bring the major, expensive-to-replace stuff, and then slowly piece an apartment together, but really lucked out with things. I ALSO decided to go the roommate route my first year out here, because then there wouldn’t need to be as much to replace. It’s really worked out. I’d be happy to give you any additional information you wanted.

Overall, moving sucked… it was expensive, stressful, I went a week without my stuff, and a week and a half without my car… but it was totally worth it once I got settled in. I have friends who have moved all their belongings, and friends who have brought nothing. Everyone has survived, in either situation. I say at least bring the stuff that is the most important to you. Life is full of memories, and certain things just have to be brought along for the ride!
